Environmental Governance in the Context of Post-Communist Transition 06/04/10 Public Lecture: “Environmental Governance in the Context of Post-Communist Transition: The role of Multilateral Development Banks and Civil Society Organizations”- Alda Kokallaj, PhD Candidate. ENG.
Time: 16:30
Location: CRRC-Azerbaijan, Khazar University, 122 Bashir Safaroglu Street, Baku, room # 13
Overview: The purpose of this project is to get an understanding on how (global) environmental governance ‘works’; how is it organized, who is involved, who or what are the main agents, and how does it reflect and/or shape the social/economic/political context that envelopes it. These facets concerning environmental governance will be investigated within the historical and spatial context of post-communist transition. More specifically this project examines the ways in which two Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) - the World Bank and EBRD- have coped and interacted with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) regarding issues of environment and participation in governance while funding development projects in post-communist transition countries.
Lecturer Bio: Alda Kokallaj is a PhD candidate at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. She has gained undergraduate and Master’s degree from the department of International Relations at Eastern Mediterranean University. Her PhD thesis focuses on the international political economy of environmental governance from a Gramscian and Polaniyan perspective. Of special interest are the environmental policies of the World Bank and the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development in post-communist transition economies and the implications of their development projects for global environmental governance.
