Grassroots Response to Gender Based Violence: Policy Implications On November 21, 2008 CRRC-Azerbaijan and United Nations Population Fund’s Combating Gender Based Violence Project held a round-table discussion on Grassroots Response to Gender Based Violence: Policy Implications with guests from Women Crisis Center – Matanat Azizova, Women’s Association for Rational Development – Shahla Ismayilova, YUVA-Humanitarian Center – Parvana Mammadova.
Aysel Vazirova, the facilitator of the roundtable discussion and National Coordinator of the UNFPA’s Combating Gender Based Violence Project, asked each guest to share their experience in combating gender-based violence at the grassroots level. Speakers talked about the activity of their organizations and covered main points of the current situation in Azerbaijan. They discussed main problems that actually lead to the gender-based violence: misinterpreted mentality, early marriages and low levels of education. Strong family values were mentioned among the factors helping the fight against GBV in Azerbaijan.
The roundtable participants, among them Baku State University Social Work students and young NGO activists, contributed to the discussion on the root causes of GBV.
The roundtable was concluded with a discussion of policy options for eradication of GBV, including adoption of a law on GBV, empowerment of women, general educational campaign and awareness-raising measures.
The series of joint CRRC-UNFPA seminars on the occasion of 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence will continue with a presentation on Quantitative Approach to Measuring Gender Based Violence on November 27 and a talk by Dr. Farideh Heyat on Gender and Gender Based Violence Research on December 4.
